Issues United Way of Kern County Champions

2-1-1

United Way Worldwide strongly supports policy initiatives that seek to strengthen the nonprofit sector through expansion of the 2-1-1 system, tax policy, and policy incentives and regulations that encourage philanthropy and volunteerism.

To accomplish this goal, United Way Worldwide and United Way of Kern County focuses on establishing a 2-1-1 Partnership with the Federal Government.

United Way of Kern County provides funding to sustain and grow 2-1-1 in Kern County through its partnership with Community Action Partnership of Kern. One of the goals is to ensure all Kern County residents have easy access to information about health and human services and opportunities to become engaged in community service.

Children's Health Coverage

Advocacy efforts in partnerships with United Ways of Calfornia to retain and expand health insurance coverage for California's children. Our efforts are so all children have health insurance and access to the quality care they need to stay healthy and in school.

United Way of Kern County focusus on improving people's health by advocating to increase Children’s Health Coverage - All Californians benefit when our children have health insurance and receive preventive care. it is not only good for our kids, but it helps costs down for all of us.

FamilyWize Prescription Drug Discount Card program - Distribution of discount cards that provides deep discounts for people without drug benefits.

Homelessness & Hunger Funding

United Way of Kern County grant-making and staff support programs addressing the need to reduce homelessness and hunger so all Kern County residents have access to an adequate quantity of quality food.

How United Way of Kern County Advocates

United Way of Kern County is non-partisan in its advocacy and knows that systemic change requires partnership among non-profit organizations, government, business, labor, faith-based groups, and community members.  

Working in partnership, United Way of Kern County takes the following approach in using public policy advocacy to advance the common good:

  • Educate community members on the policy issues
  • Connect advocates with elected officials and media outlets to champion causes
  • Engage policymakers in solutions that meet community needs
